A very different driving experience from a Silver Cloud saloon.

The aptly-named Cloud is a massively relaxing experience.
Timeline post: A very different driving experience from a Silver Cloud saloon.
All homely high-quality woodwork and deep-pile carpets of a kind you would actually appreciate in your house, removing the roof and piloting it yourself becomes an overt act of hedonism. Behind the wheel of this Drophead, you’re exposed to the elements just enough to always appreciate your surroundings, be they city or country, without being punished for it as you might in a roadster. However, also as with a roadster, you’re on show to the rest of the world, and in the Rolls’ case you’re clearly basking in a mobile luxury lounge, broadcasting wealth and self-satisfaction. It’s a feeling that only springs to mind once you acquire an audience by driving through a built-up area or in traffic, and something you’ve got to be comfortable with if you want to enjoy a car like this.

Timeline post: The car later being returned back to the UK in 2017.
Our in-house restoration team immediately began to restore this 2 former keepers Rolls-Royce with the aim to reinstate the trademark luxurious status of the vehicle and complete the car to a Concours standard. Since arriving at our Kent facility the Silver Cloud has been treated to a cosmetic restoration finishing the car in its original factory colour of Pearl Grey with a beautifully retrimmed red leather interior, grey carpets and matching red power hood.

South African millionaire Max Wilson takes delivery.

Who is Max Wilson?
Timeline post: South African millionaire Max Wilson takes delivery.
South African millionaire Max Wilson set up the Travel Savings Association (TSA) in 1963, offering cheap ‘no-frills’ holiday cruises. Passengers paid instalments to the TSA saving scheme to eventually use the funds to buy an inexpensive ocean cruise, starting from just $6 a day.

Industry leader Canadian Pacific acquired a 51% controlling interest in the promising new venture and the first maiden TSA voyage left the seaport of Liverpool in October 1963 with the famous cruise ship ‘Empress of Britain’, with the ‘Empress of England’ later joining the TSA cruise fleet.

The first TSA voyage was a huge success, chartering a two-week cruise to Spain, Morocco and Monte Carlo. Wilson stayed true to his promise of “the only thing lowered is the price – not the standards”. Later, in 1964, Max Wilson began to diversify travel empire by turning his attention to budget air travel and luxury coach holidays.
